Red, One Piece's New Movie Focusing on Shanks and the Mysterious Woman
One Piece announced a new film to be released next year. The film's teaser reveals the film is slated to hit theaters on August 6 next year. The film is called Red.
The film will likely focus on the Red Hair Pirates, Shanks. The film's teaser features many images of Shanks and also a woman. Interestingly, the woman is shown in the form of a sketch, not a full picture.
The film will be directly supervised by One Piece creator, Eiichiro Oda. The film will also become canon to the One Piece story line. According to Oda, this film was born from his desire to add a new female character in the series.
“I'm tired of drawing legendary old geezers in movies! I want to draw a new little female character! That's the character I want to make now! And that's how it started," Oda wrote on the One Piece Film Red Twitter account, which was translated on CBR.
The new film will be directed by Goro Taniguchi. He is a veteran in the anime industry having previously worked on many entries such as the Mobile Suit Gundam and Code Geass franchises. According to Oda, Taniguchi was the first person in the world to animate Luffy.
Until now, this film has only been announced to be released in Japan. A release date for overseas has not been announced. However, given the immense popularity of One Piece, it can be assumed that the film will be released in other regions shortly after its premiere in Japan.
Shanks is the boss of the Red Hair Pirates crew and one of the four Yonko in the New World. The nickname was given to the four strongest pirate captains living in the second half of the Grand Line. Shanks is known as the person who inspired Monkey D Luffy to become a pirate and search for a treasure called One Piece. It was the laid-back pirate captain who gave Luffy the iconic straw hat.
The film was announced to coincide with the broadcast of the 1,000th episode of the One Piece anime. In addition, the manga has surpassed chapter 1,000 and released volume 100. The manga began in 1998 in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump. Meanwhile, the anime began airing in 1999.
Recently, Netflix announced the creation of a live-action One Piece series. The cast for the 5 core Straw Hat characters in this series has also been revealed. This live-action series was created by Neflix and Tomorrow Pictures. One Piece Film Red will be One Piece's first feature film since Stampede two years ago.
