PT Pertamina Hulu Rokan (PHR) successfully discovered a new source of oil and natural gas (hydrocarbons) in the Rokan Working Area (WK). The find amounts to a substantial 3,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD).
PHR uncovered this new hydrocarbon source through the drilling of the Astrea-1 Exploration Well located in the Tanah Putih District, Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau.

Andre Wijanarko, EVP Upstream Business PHR WK Rokan, stated that the Astrea-1 exploration well is part of the Work Commitment Plan (KKP) of WK Rokan to the Indonesian Government through the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas). The primary objective of the well was the reservoir in the Upper Red Bed of the Pematang Formation.
The discovery of the new oil well from the Astrea-1 Well in the Rokan Working Area marks a milestone discovery coinciding with the celebration of 22 years of upstream oil and gas management under the supervision of SKK Migas. The well was drilled using directional drilling techniques with an onshore drilling rig, spudded on April 10, 2024, and reached its final depth of 7,158 feet on May 23, 2024.
Currently, PHR is conducting Layer Content Testing (UKL) with supervision from SKK Migas using a workover rig. Additionally, a series of formation evaluations are being carried out using e-line logging.
"In the first Layer Content Testing phase, the Upper Red Bed of the Pematang Formation yielded an oil flow rate of more than 3,063 BOPD. This exploration well discovery is the third well discovery following previous oil discoveries at the Sidingin North-1, Pinang East-1, and Mibasa-1 wells," explained Andre.
The purpose of Layer Content Testing (UKL) for exploration wells is to determine the economic hydrocarbon content of a layer and understand reservoir characteristics immediately after drilling. This process involves producing fluids through the drill pipe.
"If hydrocarbons are found during layer content testing, their flow rate is measured and then directed to a burn pit for combustion due to limited production facilities during the exploration phase. This is a common practice during layer content testing while ensuring safety, environmental considerations, and social impact mitigation," Andre clarified.
Head of Program and Communication Division at SKK Migas, Hudi D. Suryodipuro, mentioned that the drilling of the Astrea-1 well is evidence of the commitment of Contractors of Working Areas (KKKS) to continue drilling to achieve targets and increase national oil and gas production.
"The commitment to drilling must be upheld by PHR and other KKKS to jointly achieve the targets set by the government," said Hudi, on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
According to Hudi, the discovery of crude oil hydrocarbons from the Astrea-1 Well in the Rokan Block is good news as SKK Migas commemorates 22 years of upstream oil and gas management in Indonesia. "As an implementation of the Long Term Planning for exploration, this discovery will be followed up continuously, and the development process will continue so as to achieve massive production increases," said Hudi.
This discovery of reserves also forms an essential part of the government's national energy sector program to achieve a target of 1 million barrels of oil per day and 12 billion standard cubic feet per day (BSCFD) of gas production by 2030.
