Good news has arrived for Indonesian travelers or workers in other Southeast Asian countries. Starting June 1, 2025, Indonesian driving licenses (SIM) will be valid in several ASEAN countries. This information was announced through the social media account of the Traffic Management Center (TMC) of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police, receiving immediate positive responses from the public.

Brigadier General Yusri Yunus, the Director of Traffic Law Enforcement at the Indonesian National Police, stated that Indonesian SIMs will be recognized in eight ASEAN countries: the Philippines, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Myanmar, Brunei, Singapore, and Malaysia.

"With this policy, citizens driving in ASEAN countries can use their Indonesian SIM cards," the official TMC account of the Jakarta Metropolitan Police wrote on Thursday, June 20, 2024.

Aligned with the transition from SIM numbers to the National Identity Number (NIK), the implementation of this policy aims to streamline verification and validation processes using the NIK from the national identity card (KTP). This is expected to simplify administrative procedures and minimize potential errors.

"The adoption of the NIK as the SIM number marks a progressive step in integrating driving licenses with other national documents such as tax identification numbers (NPWP), social security (BPJS), and identity cards (KTP)," Yusri Yunus explained, as reported by the TMC account.

This policy eliminates the administrative complexities previously associated with obtaining international SIMs for driving in these countries. It saves time and costs while providing greater convenience for tourists and frequent travelers.
