Jakarta - On Saturday, August 17, 2024, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights together with the Directorate General of Immigration officially introduced the new design of the Indonesian passport at an event in Jakarta.

The new design features a dominance of red and white colors, reflecting Indonesia's national flag, and is decorated with batik motifs as a symbol of the archipelago's distinctive culture. This design replaces the green passport that has been used for many years.

Minister of Law and Human Rights Yasonna Laoly and Director General of Immigration Silmy Karim showed off the new passport to the public. According to them, this passport not only carries a stronger national element, but also reflects Indonesia's commitment to promoting local culture through important symbols such as batik. The distribution of these passports is scheduled to start in the coming year, August 17, 2025, which coincides with Indonesia's Independence Day.

Purpose of the New Passport Launch

The new design of the Indonesian passport that was created, also has several important goals and objectives. Such as the following points:

1. Improving the National Image

The new passport is not just a travel document, but also a symbol of national identity and pride. The red and white colors, along with the batik pattern, represent Indonesia's national pride. They showcase the country's diverse culture and history to the world.

2. Symbol of National Unity and Pride

The red and white design symbolizes the unity and spirit of Indonesian independence. It shows the government's commitment to strengthening the nation's sense of pride and identity, both domestically and in the eyes of the world.

3. Introducing Indonesian Culture

This passport also highlights Indonesia's cultural heritage, with a special focus on batik, which has been recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Cultural Heritage. This design is a subtle way to introduce Indonesian culture to other countries visited by passport holders.

4. Enhanced Security

Besides having a distinctive aesthetic design, this passport is also equipped with more advanced security technology. It aims to prevent counterfeiting and enhance international travel security for Indonesian citizens. Features such as watermarking, microprinting, and other security elements make the passport more difficult to forge.

5. Entering the Digital Age with Welcome

The new passport may also be designed as part of Indonesia's digitization and modernization initiatives. The government hopes to improve services by utilizing the latest technology, making immigration and other administrative processes easier.

Indonesian citizens are expected to experience a significant impact on international travel due to the launch of the new passport. More advanced security features are expected to streamline the identity check process at immigration posts around the world and reduce the risk of forgery.

For existing passport holders, they need not worry as their valid green passports can continue to be used until they expire. The replacement process does not need to be done immediately. However, for those whose passports are nearing expiration, they will need to apply for a new red-and-white passport upon official issuance on August 17, 2025. The replacement process is expected to proceed as usual, with applicants able to apply at immigration offices or through online services.

Conclusion

The launch of this new passport is seen as a strategic step in building Indonesia's image and diplomacy on the international stage. With a more modern design and technology, it is expected that this passport can provide more pride and comfort for the holder. With the implementation of this new design, it is expected that efficiency in applying for and renewing passports will also increase, along with the modernization of the administrative system in Indonesia.
