Indonesia is once again carrying out humanitarian missions. This time, aid is being sent to Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea.

Through the official website of the President of the Republic of Indonesia, the humanitarian aid dispatch took place at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta, on Monday (9/7).

Key Point

  • The delivery of humanitarian aid to these two allied nations reflects Indonesia's compassion and humanitarian spirit. President Jokowi, who attended the dispatch and delivery of aid, conveyed his wishes for Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea
  • Garuda Indonesia airlifted 14.5 tons of humanitarian aid for victims of disasters in Papua New Guinea

The aid is being sent by Indonesia to Afghanistan, which was affected by an earthquake in October 2023, and to Papua New Guinea, which experienced a landslide on May 24, 2024. Both countries suffered significant loss of life due to these disasters.

The Indonesian government, through the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), is sending various types of aid. Some of the items being sent include medicines, supplementary food, and hygiene kits.

An Expression of Concern and Humanity

The distribution of humanitarian aid to these two friendly nations is an expression of concern and humanity from the Indonesian people. President Jokowi, who was present during the dispatch and delivery of aid, expressed his hope for Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea.

"I hope this aid can help alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters in Papua New Guinea and Afghanistan, and help them recover soon," he said, as quoted from the official website of the Indonesian Ministry of State Secretariat (Kemensetneg).

The President from Central Java also instructed the delegation responsible for the humanitarian mission to carry out their duties diligently. He also wished for the delegates sent to both countries to maintain their health.

"I instruct the delegation carrying out this humanitarian mission to fulfill their duties to the best of their abilities and to ensure their safety during their mission and return to the homeland in good health," he continued.

Supported by Garuda Indonesia

The humanitarian aid delivery to Afghanistan and Papua New Guinea utilized two types of aircraft, namely commercial and cargo planes. The distribution via commercial flights was facilitated by Garuda Indonesia, the national airline. Garuda Indonesia transported 14.5 tons of humanitarian aid for disaster victims in Papua New Guinea.

The operation of these humanitarian flights by the state-owned airline is a testament to Garuda's commitment to supporting various national missions, especially in the distribution of humanitarian aid.

This is not the first time that the national carrier has been involved in such missions. In previous periods, Garuda Indonesia has assisted in delivering aid to disaster victims in Sudan, Myanmar, Turkey, and even Palestine.
